The Spaniard was recently released by the Merseyside club after his contract ended
Former Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara has decided to retire from professional football after being released by Liverpool upon the conclusion of his contract, reported renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano on Sunday.
Thiago — who played for clubs like Barcelona, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich — will be calling time on his career at the age of 33.
“Thiago Alcantara has decided to retire from professional football. [The] Former Barca, Bayern, Liverpool and Spain player has made his decision,” Fabrizio posted on X, formerly Twitter.
“Thiago’s passion and love for the game continues as he’s ready for a new chapter in football after few months planning for it,” the Italian added.
Thiago is widely known for his spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He made his first team debut at the Catalan club in May 2009 when Pep Guardiola was managing the Blaugrana. After five seasons and making 100 appearances for Barcelona, the Spaniard left the club and later revealed to BT Sport that he left because he “played with a lot of legends at Barca” and “struggled to play as many minutes as I wanted”.
He joined Bayern in 2013 on a four-year deal for a €20 million deal and soon managed to get in the first team. He became a regular starter at the German club and won seven league titles. He left the club after winning the treble — Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Pokal — in 2020 and joined Liverpool.
Although his time at the Merseyside club was greatly disturbed by injuries, he still managed to create some memories while playing under Jurgen Klopp.
As per rumours, Thiago may now join Barcelona and work as a coaching staff under his former manager, Hansi Flick.
