England’s hopes of securing the extra spot were slim, and Dortmund’s victory officially extinguishes them. This means only the top four teams in the Premier League will qualify for the Champions League, while the Bundesliga will enjoy five teams in the competition.
Guaranteed Spots for Top Bundesliga Teams
Dortmund, along with Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Stuttgart, and Leipzig, are all guaranteed Champions League spots thanks to their positions in the Bundesliga. “We aimed for Champions League through the Bundesliga, not this way,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. “But securing a spot as fifth is partly due to our success.”
