Carlos Alcaraz has clinched his first French Open title, defeating Alexander Zverev in a thrilling match with set scores of 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, and 6-2 at the Philippe Chatrier Court in Paris on Sunday, June 9. This victory marks a significant milestone for Alcaraz, making him the youngest player to win Roland Garros since 2007.
Despite holding a 2-5 lead in the third set, Alcaraz faced a strong comeback from Zverev, who won the set 7-5. However, Alcaraz managed to regain his momentum, ultimately triumphing in five sets. His resilience and skill led him to secure his maiden French Open title.
This victory not only marks Alcaraz’s first French Open win but also makes him the youngest player to claim the title since fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal won the third of his record 14 titles in 2007. At 21 years old, Alcaraz has now won three of the four major tennis events: the 2022 US Open, Wimbledon in 2023, and now Roland Garros.
Alcaraz’s achievement extends beyond just this title. He has become the youngest player in history to reach the finals of Grand Slam tournaments on all three surfaces—hard court, grass, and clay. This record was previously held by Andre Agassi, who achieved this feat at the age of 22 in 1968.
Looking ahead, Alcaraz has the potential to make even more history. If he wins the Australian Open title in 2025 or 2026, he will break Don Budge’s record as the youngest player to win all four Grand Slam titles.
Alcaraz and Zverev reached the final after defeating Jannik Sinner and Casper Ruud in their respective semi-finals on June 7. For Zverev, this match marked another near miss, as he has reached the semi-finals of the French Open for the last four years but has yet to progress to the final stage.
